2022 World Cup: three unforgettable Cameroon-Ivory Coast matches
Cameroon and Côte d’Ivoire meet on November 16 in Douala in qualifying for the 2022 World Cup (group D). A decisive match between two ogres of African football which, however, is far from the first clash between the two nations. Back on three unforgettable memorable encounters between Elephants and Indomitable Lions.

CAN 2000: Merciless Lions Against Elephants
Winner of Nigeria in the final (2-2 ap, 4 tab 3), Cameroon won the African Cup of Nations in 2000, in Ghana. His third continental coronation. And besides the Super Eagles during this campaign, the Indomitable Lions counted among their victims the Elephants.
Indeed, Samuel Eto’o and his band have in a group match mistreated 3-0 the Ivory Coast of Alain Gouaméné. Eliminated in the first round, the Ivorians were sent by Robert Gueï’s regime to a recovery internship in a military camp.
2005: Côte d’Ivoire qualified for the 2006 World Cup at the expense of Cameroon
September 4, 2005. In a highly anticipated match, counting for the 2006 World Cup qualifiers in Germany, Côte d’Ivoire conceded a defeat on their own lawn at the Félix-Houphouët-Boigny stadium against Cameroon (2-3). Author of a double, Didier Drogba thus sees the chances of his team to qualify compromised. The fault in particular to Achille Webo who scored a hat-trick for his own.
But this victory will remain anecdotal for Samuel Eto’o and his teammates. Because, a month later, the Ivory Coast will take again the head of the classification and thus qualify for the World Cup 2006 thanks to its success 3-1 in Sudan. But above all thanks to Cameroon’s misstep against Egypt (1-1). Pierre Womé could however have offered the qualification to his family if he had not missed the 2-1 penalty at the last minute against the Egyptians. A failure that will be worth insults and threats to the Cameroonian defender.
CAN 2015: Ivory Coast takes revenge on Cameroon and wins the Cup
Housed in the same group (D) as Mali and Guinea during CAN 2015 in Equatorial Guinea, Cameroonians and Ivorians are not at their best. If the Indomitable Lions play their first finals since 2010, the Elephants, they have a series of frustrating results at the CAN. The band in Hervé Renard has also obtained its ticket for this 2015 edition on the wire after a final 0-0 draw at home, against Cameroonians who had crushed them 4-1 two months earlier.
Barely in this hen, the Elephants will however succeed in waking up at the right time and thus take their revenge on the Indomitable Lions. Thanks to a strike as distant as powerful from Max-Alain Gradel, they overcome Cameroon on the smallest of the marks (1-0). This success acts as a trigger for Hervé Renard’s team which will be crowned a few days later, against Ghana.
