CAN 2021: Nigeria, the Ahmed Musa controversy

The summons of Ahmed Musa for the CAN 2021 qualifiers is not unanimous in Nigeria. Some see in the captain’s place, without a club since October, a competitive and efficient Paul Onuachu, but a reservist. And, they made themselves heard.

Nigeria would do well without a controversy over the summons of Ahmed Musa for the qualifiers of the CAN 2021. But, the presence of the captain of the Super Eagles in the list of Gernot Rohr is an incongruity. Conversely, supporters of the national team are surprised that Paul Onuachu is a reservist.

Is Ahmed Musa to blame?

Ahmed Musa has been chomping at the bit since October after leaving Saudi club Al-Nassr. And it is not for lack of trying to find a base. Moreover, the striker was on the verge of joining West Bromwich Albion in January. But an agreement has not been reached with the Premier League club. The 28-year-old winger deserved a better fate. Especially after having finished to impose itself as leader in selection. And, he got the Super Eagles out of some really bad situations. Rohr may then want to help a frame of the selection (85 caps, 15 goals) to revive.

Despite everything, Musa is lacking in competition . And, we have to admit that including Paul Onuachu in the waiting list may seem illogical. Especially since the Genk striker is the author of 26 goals including 25 in the league and two assists. Reason enough then to put him in high place for the matches of the 5th and 6th days of Group L in qualifying for CAN 2021.

Even so, it is true, the 26-year-old center-forward is struggling to replicate his club performances with the Super Eagles . Nigerian international since March 22, 2019 (7 caps), he has so far only scored one 1. However, the supporters, reacting in particular on Twitter, are convinced that he will eventually find his marks with the Nigerian national team .

The Super Eagles , leaders (8 points), will travel to Benin on March 27 (2nd, 7 points). Then, Nigeria receives Lesotho (2 points) on March 31 at the end of the CAN 2021 qualifiers.
