The score is final: 0-7. For his first playoff game for the Women’s African Cup of Nations , South Africa swept Mozambique on Wednesday. The South Africans have indeed inflicted a stinging defeat on their opponents.
Banyana Banyana took the lead in the 22nd minute of the game when Mamelodi Sundowns women’s star Melinda Kgadiete opened the scoring. Linda Motlhalo then doubled the lead in the 41st minute before Gabriela Salgado put the game out of the home side’s reach with a well-executed shot in the 45th minute.
In the second half, the South African players maintained their infernal pace. Van Wyk scores his double of the evening. Young Noxolo Cesane added the game’s 6th goal before Motlhalo joined teammate Van Wyk to score her 0-7 double.
After this setback, Mozambique is condemned to an improbable comeback in the second leg on Tuesday in South Africa.
