Euro 2021 seen from Africa: native of Bissau, Danilo shines in Ronaldo’s Portugal
Danilo Pereira is the most highly rated of the five players of African origin on Portugal’s list for Euro 2020. The native of Bissau, Guinea Bissau, is expected to start against Hungary (4 p.m. UTC, group F) on Tuesday June 15, for the entry into the running of the reigning European champions.
Danilo (13) all smiles with the Portuguese super star Ronaldo (7).
Cristiano Ronaldo no longer walks alone in Portugal. The five-time Ballon d’Or is now well surrounded within the Seleção. Around the super star, in fact, gravitates for a few years a galaxy of young stars which reinforces the influence of the Portuguese reigning European champions. In the lot, five elements have African roots: Danilo Pereira (Guinea Bissau), Renato Sanches (Cape Verde), Nelson Semedo (Cape Verde), William Carvalho (Angola) and Nuno Mendes (Angola).
Pereira is undoubtedly the most popular of the quinté. The PSG midfielder is the only Portuguese from the continent to whom the newspaper L’Équipe grants a starting place in the usual 4-3-3 of Fernando Santos, the Portuguese coach . Major player in the victory at Euro 2016, the very famous Renato Sanches would not therefore have this favor. No more than Nelson Semedo, former player of FC Barcelona and current resident of Wolverhampton. Or Betis Sevilla midfielder William Carvalho, despite his 64 caps and 4 goals. Nuno Mendes (19 years old on June 19) is too young to be an exception.

Exiled at five
So, this Tuesday, June 15, for the entry on the scene of Portugal, against Hungary (4 p.m. UTC, group F), Pereira should be aligned as a sentry in the middle, between Bruno Fernandes and Moutinho. Born in Bissau, capital of Guinea-Bissau, 29 years ago, the Parisian arrived with his family in his adopted country at the age of five. He is the oldest of his siblings. If her mother, Quinta Djata, a nurse, is known, no trace of her father has been found.
He studied in three Lisbon youth teams including Benfica where he completed his training. Snubbed by the Reds, Danilo had to go into exile in Italy to earn a living from football. Parma welcomes him in 2010 for a free transfer. Then began five years of instability. The Parmesans loan him to Greek club Aris in the second half of the 2010-2011 season, pick him up for 2011-2012 before loaning him again to Roda JC in the Netherlands.
