Islamic State (IS) attacks on Rwanda! What the RDF says
The spokesman said the Rwandan army was “clearly ready to crack down” on the Islamic State (IS) militant group and when its operations could invade Rwandan territory.
The new IS media outlet in Africa this week called Rwanda a “hostile country for Christians, oppressing the Muslim population”.
This is based on the actions of the Rwandan Armed Forces in helping the Mozambican people to defeat the rebels who are said to be collaborating with IS in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province.
In the aftermath of the incident, on social media there were Rwandans expressing concern about the terrorist activities that could be carried out by the group in retaliation.
Others express confidence in the ability of the Rwandan Armed Forces to combat it.
Col Ronald Rwivanga, a spokesman for the army, told the BBC in a written message that confronting IS activities and when to attack Rwanda was “something we are ready to address”.
“Of course. How would we be prepared to send troops to other countries if we can’t prevent [ourselves]. It would not make sense,” Col Rwivanga said.
Earlier last month, Rwanda sent 1,000 troops and police to Mozambique, while others were deployed last week.
Mozambique-backed Rwandan forces have recaptured many areas of Cabo Delgado province that had been occupied by rebels.
The governor of the province of Cabo Delgado aired on Rwandan television – which he sent to reporters – returned to the province yesterday Thursday “after two years of fleeing”.
The Mozambican and Rwandan forces are in the process of maintaining peace where they have returned to power, as they prepare for attacks to track down militants, according to a recent Mozambican military spokesman.
It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post.
The IS has recently criticized Rwanda in a recent issue of its weekly magazine in a general condemnation of Africa’s efforts to defeat the group, which it says is fighting the holy war of Jihad, especially in Mozambique.
The Rwandan army recently announced that it had helped Mozambique recapture a major port city of Mocimboa da Praia in the north of the country.
New IS supporters’ messages and messages were found on the Telegram-based telecommunications program on August 11. It sees Rwanda as a hostile country for Christians who are oppressing the Muslim population.
This message, however, does not intimidate Rwanda in any way and does not give any instructions to IS members.
BBC Monitoring has tracked down online anti-Rwanda articles from some IS-backed media outlets including Hadm al-Aswar, al-Battar, al-Adiyat, al-Dir al-Sunni, al-Murhafat and Talae al-Ansar.
New documents and messages have been posted on the Telegram by IS-affiliated news agency Nashir al Kabar News, which normally integrates IS propaganda.
The message is generally based on a recent message from the so-called Islamic State group in Africa.
One message reads: “O Christians of Rwanda, your acts of violence against innocent Muslims are the reason why Muslims oppose them.”
Only none of these pro-IS messages clearly explain where Rwanda may have killed Muslims.
IS-backed Bariqa media reported on the Telegram video that no date has been set for the capture of many black men who were beheaded before being thrown into a hole. The men are said to be civilians from West and Central Africa.
In another message, Bariqa claims that Christian Hutus killed more than 800,000 Muslim Tutsis during the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. This is misleading.
The Rwandan and Mozambican forces have recently announced that they have joined forces to seize the port city of Mocímboa da Praia in northeastern Mozambique.
The city has been under rebel control for more than two years – including the headquarters of the Mocímboa da Praia district in the province of Cabo Delgado.
About a month after the Mozambican forces began aiding Rwanda, they returned to most of the areas captured by the rebels, allegedly working with the Islamic State (IS).
The South African Union Army (SADC) also followed Rwanda to help Mozambique.
