Jupiler Pro League: Who are the Africans already crowned top scorer?
RC Genk atomized Charleroi (4-0) on Saturday in match day 33 of Jupiler Pro League. And Paul Onuachu took the opportunity to sign his 27th goal in the league. The Nigerian is heading straight for the title of top scorer in Belgian D1. 4 African strikers have already won this title.
The regular season of the Jupiler Pro League ends on Sunday. There is only one day left before the start of play-offs 1 and 2 which concern 8 teams. Unless there is a huge turnaround in this phase, Paul Onuachu should finish top scorer in the championship. The Nigerian striker scored his 27th goal in 33 days this weekend. The Super Eagle thus has six goals ahead of its first pursuer Thomas Henry (21 goals) whose OH Leuven team (11th) is not even sure to play in the play-offs.
The Genk scorer (2nd) would therefore be the 5th African to finish top scorer in the Belgian championship. The first two are also his compatriots. They are Tosin Dosunmu and Joseph Akpala. The first was at Germinal Beershot when he finished at the top of the Jupiler Pro League fireworks in 2006. He had scored 18 pawns in 21 games played. 40-year-old Dosunmu left the field in 2013.
Harbaoui 3 times “ Golden Shoe ” of the Jupiler Pro League
The second took the baton in 2008 while wearing the Sporting Charleroi jersey. That season, Joseph Akpala scored 18 goals in 31 outings. Today, at 35, he plays for FC Dinamo in Romania. After these two Super Eagles, it was not until 2014 to see a player from the African continent take up the torch. Indeed, the Tunisian Hamdi Harbaoui was a hit at the time with Lokeren (22 goals in 36 games). Then left for Zulte Weregem, the Carthage Eagles striker will manage to finish best artificer twice in a row in 2018 (22 goals in 24 games) and 2019 (25 goals in 36 games).
Harbaoui will however be dethroned by the Congolese Dieumerci Mbokani . The striker of the Leopards of DR Congo has, in fact, found the net 18 times last season with Royal Antwerp. To recap, for 3 seasons, the top scorer in the Jupiler Pro League has been African. Onuachu should thus extend this domination to four successive years.
