Rwanda: Emmanuel Rugamba, from the refugee camp to the NFL

Nothing is impossible in life.  Emmanuel Rugamba’s story should give hope to people who still believe in their dream.  The 23-year-old Rwandan, born in Zambia in a refugee camp, is now a resident of the NFL, the prestigious American Football League.

Emmanuel Rugamba, Rwanda’s forerunner in the NFL
Like in a fairy tale, the story of  Emmanuel Rugamba  should inspire.  The Rwandan could not think that his life was going to turn for the better.  Leave his difficult life as a refugee, in particular to attract the spotlight in the prestigious American Football League (NFL).  And there was light last weekend.

Emmanuel Rugamba signed a contract as a “free agent” with the Cleveland Browns.  An agreement which, in fact, made him the first Rwandan to join the National Football League.  “I just want to make a difference in the best possible way  .  Always proud to be Rwandan, ”  he tweeted, shortly after signing for Cleveland Browns.  Prior to landing his franchise contract, Rugamba played for the University of Miami for three years.  In this formation, he established himself as one of the best  cornerbacks  , the  most physical in the League  .  “Thank you to my teammates who I grew up with during my time in Miami.  You made the last two years worth it ”, thanks, the one we call Manny.

Manny, the “miraculous”

Born in a refugee camp in Zambia, Rugamba and his mother, Daniella Umutanguha, however moved to the United States.  He was only three years old.  He officially began his career at the University of Iowa where he spent the 2016 and 2017 seasons. Before being transferred to the Miami RedHawks.

Student in leadership and management of sport  , the “miracle”, now sets no limits.  He has the talent and the makings of a future big star of the NFL.   I followed Rugamba’s matches  (with his university team).  He will get even better.  Manny is really incredible and always proud to see him progress in the game,  ”says the American journalist of Rwandan origin, Ernesto Ugeziwe, in newtimes.  “I was so happy when he signed for the Browns.  And, given his talent, I couldn’t be happier for him than when he hits the top  (in the NFL).  I am sure he will continue to be successful, ”  Ugeziwe adds.

Social networks are on fire

The transfer of Rugamba to the Browns is not only historic for him, then this “deal” was also hailed by many, as a national pride.  Because, he became the first Rwandan to reach the top of American football.  The youngster has come a long way.  “I was clearly not a fan of the NFL but I will start watching the games of the Cleveland Browns”  responded G Mbokani on Twitter.  “I’ve been a fan for years and therefore so excited to see Emmanuel  (Rugamba)  become a brown,”  continues another Twitter user identified as Sparkly Chicago.

And, clearly, the Browns have therefore gained a new fan colony in Rwanda.  “I cannot believe that I discovered just now that there is a Rwandan who plays  (American)  football  .  Do I have to become a Browns fan now?   , Wonders Erica Kaze
