Rwanda has confirmed that there is no way forward for the EAC to send troops to the DRC

The Rwandan government has promised that Rwanda will not return the East African Community (EAC) troops to the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to fight armed groups.

This is the response of the Secretary of State to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation in charge of EAC, Prof. Friend Manasseh, who started a press conference, focused on the Commonwealth summit to be held in Kigali from June 20, 2022.

On April 21, 2022, EAC Heads of State met in Nairobi and agreed to send troops to the eastern part of the DRC.

Only later did the implementation of the resolution become confusing as relations between the DRC and Rwanda deteriorated due to accusations by its forces of aiding the M23 rebel group operating in North Kivu province.

The shuffle was announced on a radio broadcast but was stopped short by Army members because Secretary-General of the Presidency, Fode Bangoura, had not been notified.

The confusion was also followed by a recent request by the DRC government to refrain from sending Rwandan troops to join other EAC countries in the fight against armed groups.

Prof. Asked if the Rwandan government still has plans to send troops to the DRC, Manasseh said it would not stop sending troops. “The agreement is that we want the EAC troops and the course has been started so that the troops can go to the area, to help bring security to the area,” he said.

“Whoever asks, ‘Will Rwanda provide troops?’ As a member, there is no way for Rwanda to provide troops in the family because I think security concerns all of us in this country, as well as in other countries bordering the DRC,” he said. “The rescue squad wasn’t called for him,” she told the Associated Press.

Kenyan President and EAC Director General Uhuru Kenyatta announced on June 15, 2022 that the envoys would meet in Nairobi on June 19, in the final preparations for the deployment.
