Rwanda’s Democratic Green Party condemns Nyabugogo catchment degradation

As human-beings mark the “Earth Day 2021”, the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda is condemning Kigali City residents who continue to dump garbage in the Nyabugogo River, which is considered a source of fresh water for the daily life of the people of Kigali and other citizens in Nyabugogo Catchment.

The theme for this year’s Earth Day is  “Restore Our Earth”  which focuses on natural processes and emerging green technologies that can restore the world’s ecosystems.

The Day is celebrated as the world is threatened by a variety of issues including environmental degradation and climate change.

Although the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda is widely known as a political party, its principles include environmental protection, which is also the main value.

In a message shared by Dr. Frank Habineza, the founder and chairman of the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda, a political party formed in August 2009 in Rwanda said “Yesterday we visited River Nyabugogo, which flows into River Nyabarongo-the distant source of River Nile. ”

Dr. Habineza added that members of the party were assessing the extent of the river pollution by the surrounding communities.

He “A lot of household waste is directly dumped into the river and part of its catchment has become a dump-site.”

On this note, he condemns such behavior saying “This is deplorable and we strongly condemn these actions.”

He emphasized that all concerned authorities especially the City of Kigali to add more efforts in protecting this river and the Nile Basin catchment in Rwanda at large.

“This will help us restore this brown water color to its original color and thus we will be doing our duty in restoring our Earth.” Ends the Green Party’s statement
