A decree published on Friday in the Official Journal authorizes the maintenance of these fires, provided they are installed in very specific areas.

Respecting the speed limits is good. Until then deemed illegal by the Interior Ministry , so-called “reward” traffic lights, which turn green when motorists apply speed limits, are now authorized in France.

Road Safety confirms this Tuesday information from the Radars-auto site , which had spotted a decree published last Friday in the Official Journal. According to the requirements set by this text, these lights can be maintained – or installed – only under certain conditions. For example, they are only valid in built-up areas and cannot be found at pedestrian crossings, intersections or near the built-up area entrance sign.

“Sanction” fires still prohibited

The “reward” traffic light, also called “behavioral” light, detects approaching vehicles as well as the speed of users and turns green when they respect the speed limit, explained Road Safety.  Its objective is to make traffic more fluid and encourage compliance with the limits.

About 1,000 “reward” lights had already been used by certaiin France, accordingtes from the Road t Union transmtted by Road Safety.  The decree was issued following experiments in a few cities and a working group during the year 2020.

Please note, the decree published on Friday only authorizes “reward” lights.  The so-called “penalty” lights – which turn red when the user exceeds the speed limits – remain prohibited.
