Yassine Benzia’s incredible series comes to an end
Dijon rediscovered the taste for success and Algerian attacking midfielder Yassine Benzia scored. It was really joy this Sunday afternoon at the Gaston GĂ©rard stadium against Nice (2-0).
Every series has an end. That of Yassine Benzia was very poor for an attacking midfielder. The former Lyonnais, yet considered in his early days as one of the best footballers of his generation, had an incredible fuel exhaustion. Indeed, he had not found the net since April 21, 2018. Three years!
At the time, the Algerian international was playing at LOSC. He had saved the honor during a crushing defeat of Lille in Marseille (1-5). Since then, he has passed through Fenerbahçe (Turkey), Olympiakos (Greece) and currently in Dijon without scoring once. However, he played very little with the Dijonnais because of a buggy accident and several operations afterwards with the left hand.
So this Sunday, Yassine Benzia was only making his 6th appearance in Ligue 1 this season. And he was decisive in converting a penalty to give Dijon a 2-0 advantage against Nice. The red lantern of Ligue 1 wins this match of the 33rd day. The formation of Burgundy thus also puts an end to a series of 12 successive defeats in the league. But in the standings, the Dijonais who have only 18 points remain very far from the place of play-off that Nîmes occupies (31 pts).
