TheĀ EbolaĀ outbreakĀ inĀ easternĀ CongoĀ ā€œcontinuesĀ toĀ outpaceĀ theĀ responseĀ efforts,ā€Ā theĀ WorldĀ HealthĀ Organization’sĀ emergenciesĀ chiefĀ saidĀ onĀ TuesdayĀ afterĀ returningĀ fromĀ aĀ tripĀ toĀ Bunia,Ā inĀ IturiĀ province,Ā whichĀ isĀ oneĀ ofĀ theĀ worstĀ hitĀ areas.Ā

ā€œPerhapsĀ theĀ mostĀ alarmingĀ findingĀ isĀ thatĀ manyĀ ofĀ theĀ newlyĀ reportedĀ deathsĀ areĀ peopleĀ whoĀ diedĀ inĀ theirĀ communitiesĀ withoutĀ everĀ reachingĀ aĀ healthĀ facilityĀ andĀ withoutĀ receivingĀ care,ā€Ā ChikweĀ IhekweazuĀ said.Ā ā€œAndĀ asĀ ofĀ today,Ā 80%Ā ofĀ newĀ casesĀ areĀ outsideĀ ourĀ contactĀ listsĀ andĀ soĀ areĀ comingĀ toĀ usĀ fromĀ unknownĀ chainsĀ ofĀ transmission.ā€Ā

Congo has been battling the outbreak of a rare type of Ebola since May with no approved treatment or vaccine. The Africa Centre for Disease Control said last week that it is the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak on the continent.

AsĀ ofĀ Monday,Ā atĀ leastĀ 1,926Ā peopleĀ haveĀ beenĀ infectedĀ andĀ 702Ā diedĀ inĀ threeĀ provincesĀ inĀ CongoĀ fromĀ theĀ rareĀ BundibugyoĀ virus,Ā CongoleseĀ authoritiesĀ said.Ā CasesĀ haveĀ alsoĀ beenĀ confirmedĀ inĀ neighboringĀ Uganda.

Last week, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said a U.S. citizen working for a humanitarian organization in Congo has tested positive for the Ebola virus, without providing further details.

IhekweazuĀ toldĀ reportersĀ inĀ GenevaĀ thatĀ hisĀ visitĀ toĀ BuniaĀ hadĀ beenĀ ā€œquiteĀ encouragingĀ onĀ manyĀ fronts,Ā butĀ alsoĀ deeplyĀ concerningĀ onĀ manyĀ fronts.ā€

TreatmentĀ capacityĀ inĀ BuniaĀ isĀ nowĀ closeĀ toĀ 800Ā beds,Ā whichĀ isĀ increasingĀ everyĀ week,Ā andĀ labĀ capacityĀ hasĀ increasedĀ fromĀ oneĀ toĀ 14Ā labs,Ā whileĀ thereĀ haveĀ beenĀ improvementsĀ onĀ otherĀ frontsĀ too.

IhekweazuĀ saidĀ thatĀ despiteĀ ā€œourĀ bestĀ effortsĀ …Ā weĀ haveĀ notĀ caughtĀ upĀ inĀ theĀ race.ā€

The response has been hampered by a funding gap, attacks on health centers, and an ongoing conflict in eastern Congo, as well as mistrust among local communitis.

OnĀ Monday,Ā dozensĀ ofĀ peopleĀ workingĀ atĀ anĀ EbolaĀ virusĀ treatmentĀ centerĀ inĀ northeastĀ CongoĀ wentĀ onĀ strikeĀ overĀ unpaidĀ salariesĀ andĀ bonuses.

TheĀ CongoleseĀ authoritiesĀ declaredĀ aĀ freshĀ EbolaĀ outbreakĀ onĀ MayĀ 15Ā afterĀ theĀ diseaseĀ hadĀ beenĀ transmittingĀ forĀ weeksĀ withoutĀ officialĀ detection,Ā accordingĀ toĀ theĀ WHO.

Clinical trials for treatment began last week after researchers launched a highly anticipated study in the hope of fighting te virus.
