Briefing the UN Security Council, Leonardo Santos Simão, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel, said armed groups continue to pose a serious security challenge, particularly in the central Sahel and northern Nigeria.

“OnĀ theĀ securityĀ situation,Ā theĀ threatĀ posedĀ byĀ terroristĀ andĀ otherĀ non-stateĀ armedĀ groupsĀ remainsĀ acute,Ā especiallyĀ inĀ theĀ centralĀ SahelĀ andĀ northernĀ Nigeria,Ā rapidlyĀ targetingĀ coastalĀ statesĀ inĀ theĀ GulfĀ ofĀ Guinea.Ā TheseĀ groupsĀ areĀ adaptingĀ theirĀ tactics,Ā increasinglyĀ usingĀ advancedĀ technology,Ā suchĀ asĀ drones,Ā meansĀ ofĀ communicationĀ andĀ cryptocurrencies.”Ā

Simão also warned that drug trafficking is becoming increasingly intertwined with terrorism, while humanitarian access remains severely restricted in many conflit-affected areas. TheĀ SecurityĀ CouncilĀ alsoĀ heardĀ callsĀ forĀ greaterĀ regionalĀ cooperationĀ andĀ dialogueĀ toĀ addressĀ theĀ rootĀ causesĀ ofĀ insecurity,Ā includingĀ poverty,Ā weakĀ governanceĀ andĀ climateĀ vulnerability.Ā

“BurkinaĀ FasoĀ andĀ countriesĀ ofĀ theĀ AllianceĀ ofĀ SahelĀ StateĀ haveĀ faithĀ inĀ theĀ future.Ā WeĀ haveĀ alreadyĀ undertakenĀ thisĀ struggleĀ andĀ togetherĀ withĀ ourĀ people,Ā weĀ willĀ continueĀ toĀ demonstrateĀ greatĀ resilience.Ā TheĀ ConfederationĀ andĀ theĀ AllianceĀ isĀ openĀ toĀ allĀ dialog,Ā andĀ weĀ welcomeĀ allĀ ofĀ theĀ ongoingĀ efforts,Ā particularlyĀ theĀ initiativesĀ undertakenĀ byĀ Togo,Ā theĀ AfricanĀ UnionĀ andĀ ofĀ theĀ UnitedĀ NationsĀ OfficeĀ forĀ WestĀ AfricaĀ andĀ theĀ Sahel.”Ā
