Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye refused to accept the lawyers being forced upon him for his treason trial on Wednesday after his chosen advocates were arrested or barred from the country.Ā

Besigye, 70, a long-time rival of President Yoweri Museveni, has been in jail since late 2024 when he was kidnapped in Kenya and smuggled back to Uganda.

LastĀ month,Ā hisĀ mainĀ lawyer,Ā formerĀ KampalaĀ mayorĀ EriasĀ Lukwago,Ā wasĀ seizedĀ byĀ theĀ armyĀ andĀ thrownĀ inĀ jail,Ā whileĀ hisĀ otherĀ leadĀ lawyer,Ā Kenya’sĀ MarthaĀ Karua,Ā wasĀ barredĀ fromĀ enteringĀ theĀ country.

When his treason trial began on Monday, the court said he had to choose from a list of state-approved lawyers, but Besigye has refused.

“TheĀ legalĀ teamĀ weĀ hadĀ isĀ oneĀ inĀ whoseĀ competenceĀ weĀ placedĀ fullĀ confidence,”Ā heĀ toldĀ theĀ courtĀ onĀ Wednesday.

TheĀ judgeĀ saidĀ heĀ hadĀ twoĀ weeksĀ toĀ acceptĀ theĀ lawyersĀ andĀ adjournedĀ theĀ caseĀ untilĀ JulyĀ 29.

HumanĀ rightsĀ lawyerĀ EronĀ KiizaĀ toldĀ AFPĀ thatĀ Besigye’sĀ “chosenĀ lawyersĀ haveĀ beenĀ deported,Ā abductedĀ andĀ terrorised”Ā andĀ theĀ courtĀ hasĀ becomeĀ “anĀ instrumentĀ ofĀ theĀ veryĀ powerĀ itĀ existsĀ toĀ restrain”.

UgandaĀ hasĀ seenĀ mountingĀ politicalĀ repressionĀ inĀ recentĀ months,Ā withĀ theĀ armyĀ arrestingĀ oppositionĀ figures,Ā lawyersĀ andĀ shuttingĀ downĀ aĀ majorĀ mediaĀ group.

PresidentĀ Museveni,Ā 81,Ā hasĀ takenĀ aĀ backseatĀ sinceĀ winningĀ aĀ seventhĀ electionĀ inĀ January,Ā allowingĀ hisĀ sonĀ andĀ headĀ ofĀ theĀ army,Ā GeneralĀ MuhooziĀ Kainerugaba,Ā toĀ exertĀ increasingĀ control.

BesigyeĀ wasĀ aĀ doctorĀ toĀ MuseveniĀ duringĀ theirĀ timeĀ fightingĀ asĀ insurgentsĀ inĀ theĀ 1980s,Ā butĀ theyĀ laterĀ fellĀ outĀ andĀ heĀ ranĀ multipleĀ timesĀ forĀ theĀ presidency,Ā oftenĀ facingĀ severeĀ repression.

“WeĀ knowĀ thisĀ trialĀ won’tĀ beĀ fair.Ā OurĀ rightsĀ haveĀ beenĀ abusedĀ andĀ lawsĀ areĀ notĀ followed.Ā WeĀ noĀ longerĀ wishĀ toĀ beĀ partĀ ofĀ it,”Ā BesigyeĀ toldĀ theĀ courtĀ onĀ Monday.

BesigyeĀ initiallyĀ facedĀ aĀ courtĀ martialĀ butĀ theĀ caseĀ wasĀ laterĀ movedĀ toĀ aĀ civilianĀ courtĀ afterĀ theĀ SupremeĀ CourtĀ ruledĀ itĀ wasĀ unconstitutionalĀ toĀ tryĀ civiliansĀ inĀ militaryĀ courts.

TheĀ civilianĀ trialĀ wasĀ setĀ toĀ startĀ inĀ SeptemberĀ 2025Ā butĀ thereĀ wereĀ longĀ delaysĀ becauseĀ theĀ stateĀ onlyĀ presentedĀ evidenceĀ inĀ June,Ā justĀ asĀ heĀ wasĀ losingĀ accessĀ toĀ hisĀ lawyers.

BesigyeĀ hasĀ alsoĀ arguedĀ heĀ isĀ beingĀ illegallyĀ deniedĀ bailĀ andĀ medicalĀ treatment.
