Senegal’s ex-president Macky Sall, who is campaigning to become the next UN secretary-general, arrived in Dakar Friday for a brief meeting with his successor, a visit criticised by the former leader’s detractors.

TheĀ tripĀ marksĀ theĀ firstĀ timeĀ thatĀ Sall,Ā whoĀ ledĀ theĀ nationĀ betweenĀ 2012Ā andĀ 2024,Ā hasĀ returnedĀ toĀ theĀ westĀ AfricanĀ countryĀ sinceĀ leavingĀ officeĀ inĀ AprilĀ 2024.Ā

MoreĀ thanĀ 1,000Ā supportersĀ turnedĀ outĀ inĀ theĀ heatĀ toĀ welcomeĀ himĀ mid-afternoonĀ atĀ aĀ militaryĀ airportĀ inĀ Dakar,Ā whereĀ heĀ greetedĀ theĀ crowdĀ fromĀ atopĀ aĀ vehicle.Ā

Noisy throngs of supporters then flocked towards the presidential palace downtown as he arrived for his visit, cheering aš§d honking loudly from motorbikes.Ā

Sall’sĀ party,Ā theĀ APR,Ā whichĀ heĀ stillĀ leads,Ā hadĀ invitedĀ hisĀ supportersĀ toĀ comeĀ outĀ toĀ welcomeĀ him.Ā

SallĀ standsĀ accusedĀ byĀ theĀ currentĀ governmentĀ ofĀ violentĀ politicalĀ repressionĀ duringĀ hisĀ lastĀ yearsĀ inĀ officeĀ thatĀ ledĀ toĀ dozensĀ ofĀ deathsĀ andĀ ofĀ coveringĀ upĀ unfavourableĀ economicĀ data.Ā

TheĀ meetingĀ grantedĀ byĀ PresidentĀ BassirouĀ DiomayeĀ FayeĀ hasĀ sparkedĀ controversyĀ withinĀ hisĀ ownĀ camp,Ā whichĀ hasĀ beenĀ dividedĀ sinceĀ heĀ dismissedĀ primeĀ ministerĀ OusmaneĀ Sonko,Ā onceĀ aĀ staunchĀ ally.Ā

FollowingĀ Faye’sĀ fallingĀ outĀ withĀ Sonko,Ā heĀ mayĀ beĀ seekingĀ politicalĀ supportĀ fromĀ newĀ quarters.Ā SonkoĀ andĀ SallĀ areĀ arch-rivals.Ā

OneĀ ofĀ Faye’sĀ politicalĀ advisors,Ā AliouneĀ IbnouĀ AbitalibĀ Sow,Ā announcedĀ hisĀ resignationĀ onĀ FridayĀ inĀ protestĀ atĀ theĀ visit.Ā

“HeĀ isĀ responsibleĀ forĀ aĀ largeĀ partĀ ofĀ theĀ troublesĀ theĀ countryĀ isĀ facingĀ today,”Ā SowĀ postedĀ onĀ X.Ā

“Senegalese people have died, and families are still waiting for the truth,” he addšžd.Ā

TheĀ SenegaleseĀ presidencyĀ didĀ notĀ respondĀ toĀ aĀ requestĀ forĀ commentĀ fromĀ AFPĀ regardingĀ theĀ meeting.Ā

Sall,Ā whoĀ hasĀ livedĀ inĀ MoroccoĀ sinceĀ leavingĀ Senegal,Ā announcedĀ TuesdayĀ thatĀ heĀ wouldĀ travelĀ toĀ DakarĀ forĀ theĀ visit.Ā

A “collective denouncing the crackdown under Sall has described his visit as an “incident” and is demanding answers regarding the deaths that took place during his šenure.Ā

SallĀ saidĀ heĀ wouldĀ leaveĀ DakarĀ “immediately”Ā afterĀ hisĀ meetingĀ withĀ Faye.Ā

Burundi,Ā whichĀ holdsĀ theĀ rotatingĀ AfricanĀ UnionĀ presidency,Ā nominatedĀ SallĀ earlierĀ thisĀ yearĀ forĀ theĀ UNĀ secretary-generalĀ positionĀ ratherĀ thanĀ hisĀ ownĀ country,Ā whichĀ wouldĀ haveĀ beenĀ customary.
