Eleven people killed in a fire at an Algerian orphanage were laid to rest on Thursday at a ceremony in Bakari, on the outskirs of Algiers.

Members of Algeria’s civil defense carried the flag-draped coffins to the gravesite.Prime Minister Sifi Ghreib and other government officials were among the mourners.

TheĀ agesĀ ofĀ theĀ victimsĀ haveĀ notĀ beenĀ releasedĀ butĀ PresidentĀ AbdelmadjidĀ TebbouneĀ saidĀ severalĀ childrenĀ wereĀ amongĀ theĀ dead.Ā NineteenĀ othersĀ wereĀ injuredĀ inĀ theĀ blazeĀ thatĀ beganĀ overnightĀ onĀ TuesdayĀ inĀ theĀ MohammadiaĀ suburbĀ ofĀ Algiers.AnĀ investigationĀ intoĀ theĀ causeĀ ofĀ theĀ fireĀ isĀ underway.

AlgeriaĀ hasĀ beenĀ experiencingĀ aĀ heatwaveĀ thatĀ sparkedĀ nearlyĀ 1,000Ā firesĀ inĀ theĀ spaceĀ ofĀ aĀ week,Ā accordingĀ toĀ theĀ CivilĀ ProtectionĀ agency.Ā MostĀ haveĀ nowĀ beenĀ contained.AuthoritiesĀ sayĀ they’reĀ lookingĀ intoĀ additionalĀ safetyĀ measuresĀ toĀ protectĀ vulnerableĀ facilitiesĀ duringĀ periodsĀ ofĀ extremeĀ heat.
