The leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis has asked believers to pray for people of Goma following the volcanic eruption of Nyiragongo Yesterday.

Nyiragongo last erupted in 2002, killing 250 people and making 120,000 people homeless after the lava flowed into Goma.

Yesterday’s eruption has also left thousands leaving their homes while other properties turned into ashes due the lava flow.

Pope Francis on his twitter wrote “Let us also pray for the populations of the city of Goma, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, forced to flee due to the eruption of the great volcano, Mount Nyiragongo.”

Atleast 7,000 Residents of Goma were on Saturday received in Rwanda.

Upon their arrival, they were accommodated in different facilities including schools, some belonging to catholic church and others belonging to government and other churches.

Also the national contingency plan was immediately deployed in place to ensure safety and humanitarian services.

On Sunday, Rwanda’s Minister of Local Government visited the displaced and promise them the Government ‘assistance while waiting to return home when the situation back to normal
