Africa News24 The Ugandan military has released 36 fishermen who have been detained for weeks in Katwe prison in the country on suspicion of diverting Ugandan water into Lake Edward, between the two countries.

NoƩ Mbusa Kavasya, a fisherman from Kyavinyonge district, said five of the detainees were initially required to pay $ 300 each, while the other 21 were released under a prisoner transfer agreement.

According to the agreement, seven Ugandan fishermen who were caught in the lake on the Congolese side were also extradited to Uganda, according to Radio Okapi.

They were released after talks between the two sides, with the DRC represented by Admiral Ngoy Egide, Commander of the Edward, Albert and Kivu Lakes Protection Forces, and Colonel Dick Kiirya Kaija, head of the Uganda Fisheries Protection Unit (FPU).

Although the fishermen were released, NoƩ Mbusa Kavasya said the Ugandan naval forces had refused to provide equipment to the fishermen, including 250 small boats and 250 engines.

He said talks were ongoing between the two countries for the supply of the equipment as well.
