Seized cocaine from a drop-off off Borkum is presented during a press conference at the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), in Wiesbaden, Germany, Friday Oct. 24, 2025

LiberianĀ policeĀ sayĀ theyĀ haveĀ madeĀ theĀ country’sĀ biggestĀ drugĀ bustĀ ever,Ā afterĀ raidingĀ aĀ suspectedĀ storageĀ siteĀ nearĀ theĀ capitalĀ andĀ findingĀ whatĀ officialsĀ believeĀ isĀ aĀ hugeĀ quantityĀ ofĀ cocaine.

PoliceĀ releasedĀ photosĀ andĀ videoĀ showingĀ dozensĀ ofĀ sealedĀ suitcasesĀ andĀ boxesĀ packedĀ insideĀ aĀ lorry.Ā PoliceĀ chiefĀ GregoryĀ ColemanĀ saidĀ forensicĀ testsĀ confirmedĀ theĀ substanceĀ wasĀ cocaine,Ā worthĀ anĀ estimatedĀ $370Ā millionĀ (Ā£220Ā million)Ā onĀ theĀ street.

RaidĀ andĀ arrests

TheĀ raidĀ tookĀ placeĀ inĀ Duazon,Ā aĀ townĀ aboutĀ 20kmĀ eastĀ ofĀ Monrovia.Ā SeveralĀ peopleĀ wereĀ arrested,Ā includingĀ twoĀ foreignersĀ andĀ aĀ numberĀ ofĀ Liberians.Ā NoĀ chargesĀ haveĀ beenĀ filedĀ yet.

ColemanĀ saidĀ theĀ bustĀ followedĀ aĀ longĀ investigationĀ intoĀ traffickingĀ networksĀ thatĀ resurfacedĀ inĀ LiberiaĀ betweenĀ 2018Ā andĀ 2023.Ā PoliceĀ hadĀ beenĀ monitoringĀ theĀ groupĀ forĀ aboutĀ aĀ yearĀ andĀ aĀ half.

“ThisĀ isĀ theĀ resultĀ ofĀ thatĀ operation,”Ā ColemanĀ said,Ā callingĀ itĀ theĀ largestĀ drugsĀ seizureĀ inĀ theĀ countryĀ inĀ recentĀ years.

ForeignĀ suspects

ItĀ isĀ stillĀ unclearĀ whereĀ theĀ drugsĀ cameĀ fromĀ orĀ whereĀ theyĀ wereĀ headed.Ā ColemanĀ saidĀ policeĀ wereĀ alreadyĀ investigatingĀ theĀ networkĀ whenĀ twoĀ foreignĀ suspectsĀ arrivedĀ inĀ LiberiaĀ andĀ wereĀ arrested.

OneĀ suspectĀ wasĀ carryingĀ bothĀ aĀ SpanishĀ andĀ aĀ ColombianĀ passport.Ā TheĀ otherĀ heldĀ aĀ SerbianĀ passport.

Vice-President Jeremiah Koung praised the security forces and warned that anyone found responsible would face the full force of the law, “regardless of who you are.”

ThisĀ raidĀ comesĀ weeksĀ afterĀ anotherĀ seizureĀ atĀ RobertsĀ InternationalĀ Airport,Ā whereĀ securityĀ staffĀ interceptedĀ sixĀ cargoĀ boxesĀ afterĀ spottingĀ irregularitiesĀ duringĀ screening.

TheĀ shipmentĀ wasĀ falselyĀ labeledĀ asĀ foodĀ seasoningĀ andĀ textiles.Ā InvestigatorsĀ insteadĀ foundĀ nearlyĀ 200Ā compressedĀ blocksĀ ofĀ cocaineĀ intendedĀ forĀ export.

That airport case triggered political controversy. Critics said authorities acted too slowly, allowing some suspects to leave the country before they could be arrested

President Joseph Boakai ordered a joint investigation by police and the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency. Several suspects have since been charged, and international arrest warrants are being sought for others still at large.

itĀ hubĀ forĀ cocaineĀ movingĀ fromĀ SouthĀ AmericaĀ toĀ Europe,Ā helpedĀ byĀ weakĀ borderĀ controlsĀ inĀ partsĀ ofĀ theĀ region.Ā

The Global Initiative Against Transnational Organised Crime estimates that at least 30% of cocaine bound for Europe now passes through West Africa. Local consumption, including crack cocaine, is also risš¢ng.

TheĀ groupĀ saysĀ regionalĀ seizuresĀ haveĀ climbedĀ steadilyĀ sinceĀ 2019,Ā reachingĀ aboutĀ 30Ā tonnesĀ inĀ 2025.Ā TheĀ UnitedĀ NationsĀ hasĀ warnedĀ thatĀ traffickingĀ networksĀ inĀ theĀ regionĀ areĀ becomingĀ increasinglyĀ sophisticated.

LiberiaĀ hasĀ seenĀ severalĀ majorĀ drugĀ bustsĀ inĀ recentĀ years,Ā includingĀ aĀ 520kgĀ cocaineĀ seizureĀ atĀ Monrovia’sĀ seaportĀ inĀ 2022.Ā SinceĀ takingĀ officeĀ inĀ 2024,Ā PresidentĀ BoakaiĀ hasĀ reshuffledĀ leadershipĀ atĀ theĀ country’sĀ drugĀ enforcementĀ agencyĀ multipleĀ timesĀ amidĀ growingĀ pressureĀ toĀ curbĀ trafficking.
