š’š®šššš§:Life slowly resuming in the capital despite fears of another attack

At least 2 million of the 5 million Sudanese who fled their homes in the capital, Khartoum, have returned home.

Life is slowly resuming in several other towns ust like the city, after a military victory against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF)

Khartoum’sĀ cityĀ centre,Ā onceĀ homeĀ toĀ bustlingĀ markets,Ā toweringĀ businessesĀ andĀ wealthyĀ districts,Ā remainsĀ aĀ ghostĀ town,Ā aĀ massĀ graveĀ andĀ aĀ minefield.

PowerĀ isĀ constantlyĀ outĀ asĀ waterĀ shortageĀ becomingĀ theĀ norm.Ā ButĀ despiteĀ decimatedĀ infrastructure,Ā thoseĀ comingĀ backĀ wereĀ overwhelmedĀ byĀ theĀ thoughtĀ ofĀ seeingĀ theirĀ cityĀ forĀ theĀ firstĀ timeĀ inĀ years.

ButĀ althoughĀ theĀ authoritiesĀ promisedĀ aĀ quickĀ restorationĀ ofĀ normalĀ lifeĀ afterĀ theirĀ militaryĀ victory,Ā powerĀ isĀ stillĀ mostlyĀ out,Ā buildingsĀ remainĀ damagedĀ andĀ workersĀ areĀ goingĀ unpaid.Ā SomeĀ sayĀ theyĀ have comeĀ backĀ onlyĀ asĀ aĀ lastĀ resort,Ā fleeingĀ aĀ crackdownĀ onĀ refugeesĀ inĀ neighbouringĀ Egypt.Ā FewerĀ thanĀ 80,000Ā peopleĀ haveĀ comeĀ backĀ toĀ centralĀ Khartoum,Ā accordingĀ toĀ theĀ UnitedĀ Nations.

AĀ quickĀ driveĀ throughĀ downtownĀ KhartoumĀ leavesĀ littleĀ toĀ theĀ imagination.Ā The battles went street by street, first in April 2023 when the paramilitaries swept through town, and again last year when the army and allied fighters forced their way bck.
