South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has honored the country’s World War One soldiers at the South African National Memorial in Longueval, France, marking 110 years since the Battle of Delville Wood.He said the sacrifice of those who fought must never be forgotten.Ā 

“TheĀ menĀ ofĀ DelvilleĀ WoodĀ enduredĀ whatĀ fewĀ humanĀ beingsĀ shouldĀ everĀ beĀ askedĀ toĀ endure.Ā TheirĀ sacrificeĀ deservesĀ theĀ eternalĀ gratitudeĀ ofĀ ourĀ countryĀ andĀ indeedĀ ofĀ FranceĀ asĀ well.”RamaphosaĀ alsoĀ calledĀ forĀ greaterĀ recognitionĀ ofĀ BlackĀ SouthĀ AfricansĀ whoseĀ contributionsĀ toĀ theĀ warĀ wereĀ ignoredĀ forĀ decades,Ā sayingĀ theĀ country’sĀ historyĀ shouldĀ reflectĀ theĀ sacrificeĀ ofĀ allĀ whoĀ served.
