NowĀ headĀ ofĀ theĀ CongoĀ RiverĀ AllianceĀ (CRA)Ā andĀ alliedĀ withĀ theĀ Rwanda-backedĀ M23,Ā CorneilleĀ NangaaĀ YubeluoĀ hasĀ seizedĀ keyĀ cities,Ā includingĀ Goma,Ā andĀ vowsĀ toĀ marchĀ onĀ Kinshasa.Ā SentencedĀ toĀ deathĀ inĀ absentia,Ā heĀ remainsĀ atĀ theĀ centreĀ ofĀ theĀ DRCāsĀ escalatingĀ conflict.Ā HowĀ didĀ heĀ riseĀ toĀ power?
BornĀ onĀ 9Ā JulyĀ 1970Ā inĀ whatĀ isĀ nowĀ Haut-UeleĀ ProvinceĀ inĀ theĀ DRC,Ā NangaaĀ startedĀ hisĀ careerĀ farĀ fromĀ theĀ battlefield.Ā HeĀ studiedĀ economicsĀ atĀ theĀ UniversityĀ ofĀ KinshasaĀ beforeĀ workingĀ withĀ internationalĀ organisations,Ā includingĀ theĀ UNĀ DevelopmentĀ Programme.
National Electoral Commission (CENI) under then-president Joseph Kabila. He was responsible for organising the delayed 2018 elections and controversially declared FĆ©lix Tshisekedi the winner. His tenure at CENI ended in 2021 amid allegations of electoral fraud and US sanctions for āundermining DRC electionsā.
WhyĀ didĀ heĀ turnĀ againstĀ theĀ CongoleseĀ government?Ā
InitiallyĀ alignedĀ withĀ theĀ rulingĀ elite,Ā NangaaĀ laterĀ distancedĀ himselfĀ fromĀ PresidentĀ Tshisekedi.Ā AheadĀ ofĀ theĀ 2023Ā elections,Ā NangaaĀ saidĀ thatĀ theĀ 2018Ā resultĀ hadĀ beenĀ manipulatedĀ inĀ aĀ secretĀ dealĀ betweenĀ TshisekediĀ andĀ Kabila,Ā whichĀ TshisekediĀ denies.Ā
If I created the monster, I think it is up to me to defeat it,In August 2023, Nangaa reemerged as a key figure in the DRCās armed conflicts, launching the CRA-a coalition of 17 political parties, two political groups and armed militias. Among them was the March 23 Movement (M23), an insurgent group backed by Rwanda. Nangaa has since positioned himself as a leading figure in the rebellion against Tshisekediās goverment.Ā
