Ethiopia’sĀ oppositionĀ People’sĀ RevolutionaryĀ PartyĀ (EPRP)Ā hasĀ accusedĀ theĀ federalĀ governmentĀ ofĀ pushingĀ theĀ northernĀ TigrayĀ regionĀ towardsĀ aĀ newĀ war.Ā 

TheĀ EPRPĀ saysĀ AddisĀ AbabaĀ isĀ wagingĀ aĀ propagandaĀ campaignĀ toĀ psychologicallyĀ prepareĀ publicĀ opinionĀ forĀ conflict.

LastĀ weekend,Ā AddisĀ AbabaĀ organisedĀ aĀ demonstrationĀ toĀ denounceĀ forcedĀ conscriptionĀ byĀ theĀ TigrayĀ People’sĀ LiberationĀ Front.

HumanĀ RightsĀ WatchĀ hasĀ alsoĀ accusedĀ TigrayanĀ authoritiesĀ ofĀ abductingĀ andĀ unlawfullyĀ recruitingĀ civilians,Ā includingĀ childrenĀ asĀ youngĀ asĀ 15.

TheĀ TPLFĀ hasĀ deniedĀ anyĀ forcedĀ conscriptionĀ butĀ onĀ Sunday,Ā theĀ group’sĀ headĀ urgedĀ theĀ peopleĀ ofĀ TigrayĀ toĀ ā€œrestoreĀ theirĀ honourā€Ā byĀ preparingĀ toĀ defendĀ theĀ region’sĀ sovereignty.

ā€œTigray’sĀ sovereigntyĀ willĀ notĀ beĀ guaranteedĀ byĀ peace,ā€Ā heĀ said.

InĀ 2020,Ā TigrayĀ foughtĀ aĀ brutalĀ two-yearĀ civilĀ warĀ againstĀ theĀ centralĀ governmentĀ thatĀ killedĀ tensĀ ofĀ thousandsĀ ofĀ peopleĀ andĀ displacedĀ millions.
