Despite harsh weather conditions in some parts of KwaZulu-Natal, the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) expressed confidence that the first day of the voter registration weekend was a success.
IEC Provincial Electoral Officer (PEO) Ntombfuthi Masinga said that out of over 270,000 people who visited voting statio๐งs in the country before 3pm on Saturday, 63,000 of them were recorded in the province, and 8,500 were new registrations.ย
She said there were 5,029 voting statio๐งs in the province, including 146 tents that were erected as temporary structures in areas where there are no permanent structures that could be used as voting stations.ย
In the northern coastal area of KZN, we could not pitch the tents on Friday due to strong winds, but our suppliers ensured they were ready by Saturday morning for the voting stations to start operating at 8am,โ said Masinga.
She also commended young people, most of whom are first-time voters, for coming out in big numbe๐ซs to the voting stations.
We are happy to report that ๐ค๐๐ has done it again, as we have reported the highest number of activities at voting stations across the province.
We are quite excited with this because it is quite early in the day, and we hope that we will be able to meet the target that we are chasing as the province to get all those young people that we need to get into the voters roll.โ

She said the IEC was hopeful that more prospective voters would continue to use online registration to register, check the๐ขr voter registration status, and make sure that they are registered where they intend to vote before the data-free platform is closed when Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa proclaims the election timetable a week after the registration weekend.

โSo that they are not disappointed on election day to show up only to find that their voting stations have changed,โ said Ma๐ฌinga.
IEC Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sy Mamabolo told the media earlier this week that the IEC has found that women and young people, especially in Gauteng, KwaZulu Natal, and the Western Cape, are the highest number of people who are registering through the online system.
Women remain the leading users of the online registration platform, accounting for 61% of all online registration activities,โ said Mamabolo.
Young people are also embracing digital registration in significant numbers, with the age category 16 to 29, which contributes 50% of all online transactions,โ he said
